Why I Love Working for BCHC
Brenda McIntosh, staff member since January 12, 2009
What is your role here at Bramalea CHC?
I am a Diabetes Nurse Educator with the Diabetes Education Program. This means I work closely with people with type 2 Diabetes/prediabetes and give them the education and support they need to self-manage their condition.
Have you worked at a Community Health Centre (CHC) before?
Yes! The thing that attracts me to the CHC work environment is that I love working within the team approach. The different health professionals I work with have so much knowledge and expertise in different areas I can access very easily. If I want to know the latest trends and events in the community I can talk to the Community Health Educator or Health Promoter. I can consult with a nurse practitioner or physician formally in a huddle or informally at lunchtime, this expertise is all at my fingertips or a short walk away!
What attracts you to the CHC model?
For clients this model is especially effective because they have 'one stop shopping' for all their healthcare needs. At one visit, clients can possibly visit a nurse practitioner, a dietitian and a social worker. This saves the number of times a client has to take time off work or travel to come to the Centre.
What are the benefits about Bramalea CHC?
I think compared to other health care environments the pay is similar, but the really great thing here is the HOOPP retirement plan which is awesome and usually only available at a hospital. Also a sense of team is really strong at Bramalea. I work in the Diabetes Education Program but my team is all the staff at BCHC. In other CHCs I've seen people start to work in silos and not really collaborate across disciplines. Collaboraton makes for a healthier community.
What is unique about BCHC?
At BCHC we do not only "talk the talk" of health promotion in the community, we "walk the walk" as staff of the organization. On any given day you will see a group of staff sharing a salad for lunch; we encourage each other to make healthy food choices. The organization supports gym memberships for staff at a local fitness club; this creates a built in network of "workout buddies". We have regular "Pedometer Day Challenges" to make it fun and competitive to get physical activity. So we really believe in health promotion not only for clients, but also for staff.
